My grandmother was a character. I lived with her for 6 years after I graduated high school in 2001. I had started working at the Dairy Queen in June of 2001. I just walked to work, it was just up and over the hill close to her house.
Dairy Queen was my first real job, and actually I had a blast working there. I tend to have a blast no matter where I am at. My grandmother loved a chicken strip basket from “DQ” but she would always tell me “I don’t want those fries, tell them I want slaw instead.” So that is what I did.
Living with my “grams” was fun and challenging at times. She always had my best interest. I remember this time my friend and I were going to Wal-Mart and I had asked my “Grams” if she wanted anything “No, honey I don’t need anything” but, as I started out the door she said ” oh, bring me a surprise.” I just laughed and I always brought her a candy bar, or if I went to Wendy’s I would bring her a baked potato with lots of cheese. She loved cheese on her potato.
I think the most challenging part was when I started college in the fall of 2001 at West Virginia Northern Community College, in New Martinsville, WV. Working and going to school was difficult. I was so busy and so tired. Sometimes I’d walk through the door and “Grams” would want me to go to Wal-Mart or the store. I would be tired from school, but now that I look back and I have to admit I would get upset a little, never a lot. I often think to myself now, back then she just wanted to get out of the house. If I’d replace the roles she would do it for me. I would have done anything for my “Grams” now that I’m older I wish I would have thought before I spoke, and I’m still learning on that one.
I encourage you to go that extra mile for your loved ones because if you look back later on in life. You will think, what was I thinking of why did I do that. You know they would go the extra mild for you. Don’t You?
